Horst festival unveils full 2019 lineup and new location

Horst announces new location, full 2019 festival lineup, Horst Labs and Horst Exhibition

From 2014 to 2018, Horst Arts & Music took place on the idyllic Castle grounds in Holsbeek. It grew into an internationally renowned platform for showcasing cutting-edge electronic music, inventive in-situ art, and architecture. Horst aligned a three-day immersive music festival with longer-term trajectories in which architects were invited to create unique stages and dancefloors, and in which contemporary artists were commissioned to enter into dialogue with their surroundings through site-specific new productions.

This new chapter builds on the insights from over the past five years but touches wider than ever before. As a first expression of our new ambitions, Horst will unfold into a cutting-edge Lab, an Exhibition with new in-situ artwork and a three-day Festival momentum. With these initiatives, we strive to further develop young and creative talent and positively impact spaces and cities where we operate.

The new Horst originates in Vilvoorde, Brussels
In 2019 Horst will focus on ASIAT - a former military site with two iconic cooling towers as a backdrop - and part of Vilvoorde, a suburb north of Brussels. The ambitions for the site share a common ground with Horst’s mission to develop spaces and cities. In time it will grow into a new city district with various facilities and public functions, meeting the needs of the fast-growing population. Horst will use art, architecture, and music as instruments to activate a district in transition and stimulate the development of ASIAT.

The ASIAT site comprises 6 hectares of urban space with over twenty warehouses, all shaped in different sizes and arranged within a maze of corridors, green, urban spaces and two iconic cooling towers as a backdrop. It is the ultimate, blank canvas for Horst. It reminds us of a long lost power structure, almost irrelevant in today’s society. A space to be activated and infused with artistic, creative and urban initiatives.

Horst Festival 13–15 September 2019
This new horizon marks a new musical outlook with new ambitions. A three-day music-festival, four stages, sixty artists and over 15.000 festival visitors. Horst Festival is back and more ambitious than ever. The program features a consciously curated selection of emerging and established Belgian and international artists, producers, DJ’s and performers who share adventure and flair as a common denominator. As always we will showcase a broad range of contemporary dance music: from techno to EBM to various strains of more leftfield- oriented acts and experimental pop.

The Festival momentum also counts as the final destination of Horst’s artistic itinerary. It is a symbiosis of autonomous artworks, community projects, inventive stage structures, scenography, architecture and the collective experience of an innovative music festival.

A limited amount of Early Weekend tickets are now on sale until midnight Sunday, April 7. Early Weekend tickets cost €99. Camping Weekend ticket cost €48, including 3 x royal brunch and our much-celebrated lush campsite atmosphere.

Horst Exhibition - Fallen Empires And Refound Desires July - September 2019
Horst Exhibition permeates the publicly accessible terrain of ASIAT with in-situ commissioned works. With a strong focus on cross-disciplinary practices, hovering between artworks, collaborative projects, stage design, scenography and architecture. The Exhibition runs from mid-July until September, and is reconfigured for its final destination: the Festival. The artistic program and participating artists will be announced by the end of April.

Horst Lab July 2019 - in cooperation with KU Leuven
Horst strongly believes creativity is our new human capital in an ever-changing digitizing world. Creative cultures increase in economic value but still encounter many barriers. More specifically, young creatives face the paradox of experience. A gap in practical experience, between an academic degree and a first professional practice. Therefore, Horst presents the Lab in partnership with KU Leuven, Europe’s most innovative university. A new component with the aim of creative talent development.

This year, the first series of 4 Labs will open to over 75 international young creatives from all backgrounds. The Music Lab, the Design Lab, the Art Lab, and the Architecture Lab will all be held in the first two weeks of July. The Lab has the ambition to be a portfolio enriching and life-changing experience for every participant and is intended to anyone with a passion for learning, sharing, and a desire to be involved in the evolution of artistic and creative industries.

All details about the Labs, coaches, and registrations will be announced early-May.

KU Leuven
In collaboration with KU Leuven - Europe’s most innovative university and substantive partner of Horst since the very beginning in 2014 - Horst wants to connect the worlds of art, science and creativity. As a recognized knowledge institution, KU Leuven plays a pioneering role in the public and cultural debate. It encourages personal initiative, exchange of ideas, collaboration and critical reflection.
