BBC Radio 1’s rising star Monki compares notes about working in radio with the highly influential former German presenter Monika Dietl.
German DJ Monika Dietl manned a two-hour slot on the West Berlin station Sender Freies Berlin’s youth program Radio 4U and played an instrumental role in introducing acid and electronic dance music to Berliners.
Contemporary radio whiz kid Monki fulfills a slightly different function as a BBC Radio 1 host who also plays live and runs both a label and club night. The two women represent starkly distinct eras of broadcasting, which made for an interesting exchange about how the challenges of being on air have developed in the new millennium and how to mitigate them.
