Nathan Micay has provided the full original score to a new HBO & BBC TV series called ‘Industry’ - centred on young graduates of mixed backgrounds, entering the cut-throat world of London finance. Today LuckyMe release the show’s main theme - ‘INDUSTRY’ - a widescreen electronic composition evocative of ‘the city’.
With widespread excitement including 5-star reviews in The Guardian and The Independent, Mickey Down and Konrad Kay’s new TV drama ‘INDUSTRY’ is set to be a smash. The first episode of ‘INDUSTRY’ was guest-directed by ‘Girls’ actress, writer, director and producer Lena Dunham. Described as “sex, drugs, and capitalism in London” by Rolling Stone, it follows a group of young graduates competing for a limited number of positions at a leading international bank in London.
Through the eyes of these young grads fuelled by ambition and drugs, ‘INDUSTRY’ examines issues of gender, race and class in the workplace, as the impressionable new employees begin to forge an identity within the pressure cooker environment of Pierpoint & Co.’s trading floor. They were promised meritocracy, but hierarchy is king.
Nathan Micay’s title track channels the spirit of Tangerine Dream and Jean Michelle Jarre, also blending euphoric trance and dream pop with excerpts of the characters’ dialogue, creating a celestial mezzanine that both compliments the TV show, and excels as standalone art. As The Quietus highlighted in 2019, “Micay’s strength as a composer and producer comes from how he keeps this narrative flowing”. Scoring for TV was a natural progression for the multi-instrumentalist:
“My catalogue is best known for dance records, but since 2016 I’ve enjoyed quietly extending into score work for friends shorts and a feature. My goal in music has always been to reach for a cinematic quality. Circumstances aligned nicely then, when the title track to ‘Blue Spring’ showed up on the radar of the ‘INDUSTRY’ show runners, who cut a screen test to the track. The timing of everything coincided with a year of cancelled touring and forced attention to working on this score – which is something I’ve greatly enjoyed. It’s been one of the greatest honours to have the confidence of HBO and production company Badwolf behind me, while I chart a road less travelled, in this modern series.”
