Brooklyn producer Maya Bouldry-Morrison (aka Octo Octa) makes instrumental house music that is all about the feels. For her, every instrument and voice she weaves together is a palette of emotions. “Move On (Let Go) (De-stress Mix)”—the lead single from Where Are We Going?, her upcoming record for Honey Soundsystem—is her approximation of sonic therapy. It is as soothing as house music gets, a track that would work wonders in the healing saunas of a spa.
There is an almost new age vibe to “Move On (Let Go)” that comes from its opening salvo of jazzy keys and pulsating bassline. It’s a slightly introverted but highly emotive touch that Bouldry-Morrison borrows from the likes of DJ Sprinkles. But “Move On (Let Go)” is also cleaved from classic elements: It includes funky, slightly jungle-esque breakbeat and chopped up vocal samples. Bubbling in the background, a voice says “Let go of it” over and over again, gently drilling into your head that this track will help you get over whatever is ailing you. Instead of reaching for your dancing shoes, Bouldry-Morrison implores you to put on some slippers, sit back, and relax.
