Flow Festival will once again host almost 150 performers. The festival’s program is a comprehensive look at a wide spectrum of culture, from pop music to experimental art. The extensive music and art programs, high quality curated restaurant selection, enchanting festival site and large-scale sustainability program have ensured Flow Festival a position as one of Europe’s most interesting festivals.
The first act announced for the 2020 edition: Bon Iver, an American indie-folk sensation that draws from a wide range of musical genres. One of the Flow audience’s most requested artists performed last time in Helsinki at the 2012 Flow Festival.
Flow Festival’s newest bookings are award-winning, leading British rap and grime artist Stormzy, whose album currently holds the number one spot on the British album chart, R&B star FKA twigs whose productions and performances belie her complete mastery of the pop aesthetic, Michael Kiwanuka whose latest album has been a frequent sight on lists of the last year’s best releases as well as Mac DeMarco, who has grown into a bona fide alternative rock superstar. Flow will also host a show by punk phenomenon Bikini Kill, whose political lyrics and thought-provoking performances helped create the Riot Grrrl movement in the early 1990s. They reunited in 2019.
Also appearing at Sivulahti are electronic group Chromatics who released a new album called Closer to Grey after a lengthy break from recording, Koffee, a reggae star who brings together newest reggae sounds with Jamaican cultural and musical traditions as well as Mabel, one of the most prominent singers from a new generation of British R&B singers. Domestic additions to the lineup are one of the top Finnish rappers Gettomasa as well as Henrik! and Teksti-TV 666 making a Life Aid 2020 appearance together, which is sure to bring a huge amount of guitars on stage.
For the fourth year, Flow is collaborating with Resident Advisor, the world’s leading electronic music media, to produce the Front Yard stage. This year, too, featured will be veterans as well as fresh, up-and-coming acts – among them three legendary German artists: DJ Koze with his magical soundscapes, house music pioneer Dixon and one of the most influential people in techno, Marcel Dettmann. Also making the Front Yard crowd move and groove will be house virtuoso Kerri Chandler from New Jersey, Avalon Emerson, an idiosyncratic American sound wizard drawing from both house and techno, who recently settled in Berlin as well as Detroit-based electro legend DJ Stingray.
Also taking to the RA Front Yard stage will be hyped techno artist VTSS from Warsaw, Brazilian DJs Badsista and Cashu playing a back-to-back set, Peter Invasion, a familiar sight at all the leading clubs in Berlin, German DJ Sedef Adasi, who has a real talent for moving elegantly from genre to genre and Italian DJ Paquita Gordon. The stage will feature live performances from Kris Baha, an industrial influenced artist who recently moved from Melbourne to Berlin, Minimal Violence who have established themselves on the Vancouver music scene and Finnish electro legends Mr Velcro Fastener who have a 20-year career behind them. Other domestic additions include internationally known techno artist Mono Junk as well as Morphology, Trevor Deep Jr, All Good Sound System, Hanna Ojanen, Antti Salonen, Eric Filipus and Electronic Market.
Flow Festival’s latest booking are The Strokes from New York. They play in Europe infrequently and finally, one of the most requested bands at Flow plays Finland, too. The Strokes hit it big with their debut album Is This It in 2001. British music magazine NME named it the best album of the decade and the fourth-best of all time. The band brought the 60s garage rock sound into the 21st century and had a major impact on the music of the millennium. Since then they’ve released a total of five successful studio albums. Their best-known songs include Last Nite and Reptilia.
Also confirmed for Flow is 070 Shake, hailing out of New Jersey, whose eagerly awaited debut album dropped in January and put her in the well-deserved spotlight. 070 Shake first came to people’s attention when she was featured on Kanye West’s album ye, and she has also worked with Pusha T, Nas and DJ Khaled, among others. The wonderful Jesse Markin, who’s been making waves on both the Finnish and international indie scene, and Maustetytöt, whose debut album was one of the most acclaimed and original records last year, will also be appearing.
In addition to its extensive musical lineup, Flow Festival is also known for its topical arts program, rich, varied and high-quality food offering and magical festival area. Three-day passes for Flow Festival are now available at Ticketmaster and Tiketti. More lineup announcements to follow soon.
